Abbott & Fenner Scholarship

  • Amount: $1,000
  • Eligibility:  For high school juniors or seniors as well as all students currently enrolled in any accredited post-secondary institution
  • Process:  Students will write an essay on the topic provided.  The essay should be between 500 and 1,000 words.  This year’s topic is “Describe your educational, career and life goals.  Explain your plan for achieving these goals.  Include your degree/major, why you selected it, and how this degree/major will help you achieve your goals”.

AES Scholarship

  • $500 scholarship sponsored by AES Engineers
  • Applicants do NOT have to be interested in becoming Engineers.  Applicants must simply submit an essay between 500 to 1,000 words on the following topic:  When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful?  What relationships for accomplishments will be important on this journey?

Barton College

Honors Trustee Scholarship – recognizes the most excellent all-around students through invitation only.  Eligibility requirements include:

  • $10,000/year - renewable
  • Required test scores:  1100 SAT (minimal critical reading score: 540) or 24 ACT
  • Required GPA to qualify:  3.25
  • Must maintain 3.25 GPA to keep the scholarship

Trustee Scholarship – recognizes the most excellent all-around students.  Eligibility requirements include:

  • $10,000/year - renewable
  • Required test scores:  1100 SAT (Combined critical reading and math scores) or minimum 24 ACT composite score.
  • Required GPA to qualify:  3.25
  • Must maintain 3.25 GPA to keep the scholarship

Presidential Scholarship

  • $6,500/year – renewable
  • Required test scores:  1050 SAT (combined critical reading & math scores) or 22 ACT composite score. 
  • Required GPA to qualify:  3.0
  • Must maintain 3.0 GPA to keep the scholarship.

Barton W. Stone Scholarship

  • $5,000/year – renewable
  • Required test scores:  950 SAT (combined critical reading & math scores) or 20 ACT composite score. 
  • Required GPA to qualify:  2.7
  • Must maintain 2.7 GPA to keep the scholarship.

John J. Harper Scholarship

  • $3,000/year – renewable
  • Required test scores:  850 SAT (combined critical reading & math scores) or 17 ACT composite score. 
  • Required GPA to qualify:  2.5
  • Must maintain 2.5 GPA to keep the scholarship.

BBB Torch Scholarship

  • Amount:  4 - $1,000; 1 - $3,000 and 1 - $5,000 scholarships are available.
  • Eligibility:  students must personify high ethics as demonstrated through leadership, community service, overall personal integrity and academic excellence.  Students eligible include high school juniors, seniors and college undergraduates. 
  • Requirements:  Students must submit a 400-500 word essay, along with an application, transcript and a letter of recommendation from a BBB accredited business.  The essay topic is as follows: “Keeping in mind BBB’s vision, please cite examples of how you might benefit, both as a consumer and in a business setting, through BBB’s efforts to accomplish its mission” 
  • Deadline:  Completed application packets are due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 30th, 2015.

Carson Scholars Fund

  • Award:  $1,000 (one time payment)
  • Eligibility:  Student must be in grades 4 through 11, must be nominated by a school counselor or school administrator, must have a minimum 3.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale (unweighted), and demonstrate humanitarian qualities in their schools and communities through volunteer work and/or community service above and beyond what is required.      * Note: only one student may be nominated from each school.
  • Process:  If you have at least a 3.75 unweighted GPA and you are interested in being nominated, you must contact Mr. Willoughby by December 1st, 2015.  The nominee selected to represent GHS will be the best candidate for the scholarship, meaning GPA, volunteer/community service and character will be considered.
  • To apply:  You must be nominated by a school counselor or school administrator. (www.carsonscholars.org ).  If you are selected, you will be notified by December 7th, 2015.
  • Deadline:  Nominations are due in by December 22nd, 2015.  Deadline for nominated students to complete their online application is 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday, January 8th, 2016.

Charlie Adams Endowed Scholarship

  • $1,500 scholarship for one senior, female student-athlete participating on the varsity cross country team at a NC High School Athletic Association member school and one senior, male student-athlete participating on the varsity wrestling team at a NC High School Athletic Association member school. This is a one-time, nonrenewable scholarship.

Clary Medal Award

  • $2,000 scholarship for one male and one female graduating senior, student-athlete participating on a sanctioned varsity sport team during his/her senior year at a NC High School Athletic Association member school.  This is a one-time, nonrenewable scholarship.
  • Applicants must have participated on at least 2 sanctioned varsity sports during his/her high school career. More specific requirements are listed on the website below

This Scholarship is only for current seniors who are at least 16 years old.

About:  Discover Student Loans is giving away $50,000 in scholarship to high school and college students.  Now through February 29th, 2016, students are automatically entered to win a $2,500 scholarship when they sign up to receive helpful tips on planning and paying for college at CollegeCovered.com

Elks Lodge – Most Valuable Student Scholarship

  • Goldsboro Elks Lodge #139 participates in the National Elks Lodge Student Scholarship Programs.  Local students will be awarded scholarship money as they advance in the state and national scholarship competitions.    Potential scholarship amounts could range from $1,000 per year up to $12,500 per year.

  • Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States and plans to pursue a 4-year degree on a full time basis, in a U.S. College or University is eligible to apply.
  • For more information, go online to www.elks.org/enf/scholars.  Click on the most valuable student scholarship link, then download the application.  Follow the instructions. If you complete the application online, you must print the completed application and submit it to Mr. Willoughby to be turned in.  If you want a paper copy, see Mr. Willoughby.

Elks Lodge – Nursing Scholarship

  • Amount:  $1,000 one year only
  • Eligibility:  This scholarship is open to all students who are pursuing a career in nursing and have been accepted in a NC school that offers a nursing degree program leading to a nurse license.  It is recommended that you be in the top 25% of your class and be actively involved in nursing related activities to apply.  You must be a citizen of the USA. 
  • Process:  Specific instructions are attached to the application.  An essay is required.  The topic is as follows:  “Why I want to become a Nurse”.

Emmet & Mary Robinson Scholarship Fund

  • Amount:  Will vary based upon the funds available. 
  • Eligibility:  Must be a resident of Wayne County, NC as well as a senior in a Wayne County Public High School (both male & female students may apply), must pursue a degree in the fields of nursing, medicine, agriculture or in the ministry of the Presbyterian & Episcopal Church, must demonstrate financial need and possess traits of high moral standard.
  • Recipients must attend an accredited, public or private, 2 or 4 year college or university; must be enrolled full-time each semester and maintain a minimum, cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the end of each semester.
  • Scholarship may be renewable for up to 3 additional years, after the freshman year (or until the bachelor’s degree is obtained, whichever is earlier).

Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program

  • The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential
  • For students primarily interested in computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health & science
  • Eligible students who apply for the GMSP have the opportunity to attend any U.S. accredited college of their choice, with renewable funding until graduation from college.
  • Students may apply online at www.gmsp.org; submission deadline is 11:59 EST on January 14, 2015.
  • 1,000 students will be selected as scholars based on the following criteria:
    1. Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American.
    2. Have attained a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
    3. Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities.
    4. Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria by submitting a FAFSA.

GE – Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program

  • Annually awards roughly 20 college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with $10,000 renewable scholarships (up to $40,000 per recipient).
  • Eligibility:  Demonstrate strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA); must show financial need, be a citizen of the USA, be a high school senior attending high school in the U.S., demonstrate attributes of leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship at school, the workplace and/or the community; & plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited 4-year college or university in the United States for the entire 2016-17 academic year.

Jerry McGee Endowed Scholarship

  • Amount:  $1,000 for 2 senior year high school student-athletes from NC High School Athletic Association member schools each year.
  • This award honors both male and female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves by overcoming adversity and returned to excel beyond expectations in their scholastic athletic sport(s).  More specific requirements are listed on the website below.

Lenoir-Rhyne University-Teaching Scholars scholarship program

  • Amount:  $22,000 ($5,500 each year, renewable for 4 years)
  • Eligibility:  This is an opportunity for exemplary high school seniors to receive a prestigious scholarship and develop the skills to become an effective teacher leader.  This scholarship is only for students who pursue a degree in teaching
  • To Apply:  You should first apply for admission to Lenior-Rhyne University.  Once application has been submitted, visit edu.lr.edu/teachingscholars to apply for the scholarship. 
  • Deadline:  Priority consideration will be given to students applying by January 10th, 2016.  It is recommended to apply immediately as spaces for this scholarship program are limited.

LendEDU Scholarship

Amount:2 - $2,500 scholarships are available.

Process:  Go to https://lendedu.com/blog/scholarship-application/ and follow the instructions.  All that is needed is a 750 word essay response to the following question – How do you plan to avoid excess student loan debt?  Submit the information on the website provided.

Deadline:  All entries must be submitted before October 31st, 2015.

Morehead-Cain Scholarship - UNC Chapel Hill

  • Provides a full, four-year scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill that covers tuition, fees, housing, meals, books, laptop, and summer enrichment program.
  • Recipients are students who initiate, act, impact, influence, and inspire.   Think of ways you do these things.
  • To be selected, seniors must be a competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  In addition, you must demonstrate moral force of character, scholarship, physical vigor, and leadership. 
  • GHS can nominate 2 seniors for this scholarship competition, and students can also self-nominate.

NC Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarships

Eunice Riggins Memorial Scholarship

  • Amount:  $2,000, non-renewable (one year only)
  • Description - open to any young woman who is currently graduating from an accredited high school in North Carolina and who expects to enroll in a four-year college or university in the state of North Carolina next fall. 
  • Eligibility:  1) Application submitted to the college of choice; 2) Academic rank in the top 10% of class; 3) Minimum SAT score of 1650 or ACT composite score of 20; 4) Good character; 5) Participation in extra-curricular activities (school & community); 6) Financial need is not the primary consideration.
  • Deadline:  All application components must be submitted to the Chapter Scholarship Chairman by March 15th, 2016.

Mary Rose Mills – Linda Rankin Memorial Scholarship

  • Amount: $2,000, non-renewable (one year only)
  • Description - open to any student who is currently graduating from an accredited high school in North Carolina and who expects to enroll in a four-year college or university next fall, and who meets eligibility criteria. 
  • Eligibility:  1) Application submitted to the college of choice; 2) Academic rank in the top 10% of class; 3) Minimum SAT score of 1700 or ACT composite score of 22; 4) Good character; 5) Participation in extra-curricular activities (school & community); 6) Financial need is not the primary consideration.
  • Deadline:  All application components must be submitted to the Chapter Scholarship Chairman by March 15th, 2016.

The Clare Johnson Marley – Mary Earle Berger Fine Arts Scholarship

  • Amount: $2,000, non-renewable (one year only)
  • Description - open to any student who is currently graduating from an accredited high school in North Carolina and who expects to enroll in a four-year college or university next fall, and who is declaring as his/her major an area of the fine arts
  • Eligibility:  1) Application submitted to the college of choice; 2) Academic rank in the top 20% of class; 3) Minimum SAT score of 1650 or ACT composite score of 20; 4) Good character; 5) Participation in extra-curricular activities (school & community); 6) Financial need is not the primary consideration.

Miss Blue Revue Contest

  • Purpose:  This program is designed to provide the participants with opportunities to volunteer in our community attend cultural events, improve communication, social skills, and study habits through workshops and other interactive activities. In April the participants will have an opportunity to complete for the title of Miss Blue Revue and represent the Sorority in all community events for 2 years and be awarded other prizes and recognitions.  The Blue Revue pageant serves as Zeta Chi Zeta’s scholarship fundraiser and each participant will be eligible to apply for a scholarship during their senior year of high school.
  • IMPORTANT: first interest meeting will be on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm.  The meeting will take place in the Zeta Room located in the Dillard Alumni Building 801 Poplar Street Goldsboro, NC.

NC Alpha Delta Kappa Student Achievement Scholarship

Amount:  Not given

Eligibility:  applicants must be graduating seniors of a NC high school pursuing a degree at a school of higher learning; must have a weighted GPA of 2.5 to 3.5 and an SAT score in the range of 1344-1560 (Math+Verbal+Writing) OR an ACT composite score range between 20-24.  (NOTE:  Students with lower or higher GPA or test scores will not be considered).  Applicants are also judged based on their service to school, community, and church as well as their integrity and leadership potential.

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards

  • Recognizes young people who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative by providing scholarships ranging in value between $2,000 and $25,000 to high school seniors who own and operate their own small business.
  • Apply online at www.NFIB.com/YEA.  Application opens up on October 1st, 2015 and closes December 18th, 2015.

North Carolina State University - Park Scholarship

  • Provides the full cost of education at North Carolina State University, funding for a personal computer, educational trips, retreats, seminars, and grants for research/service/international projects (nearly $98,000).
  • Park Scholars are selected based on four criteria:  scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
  • To be eligible for the Park Scholarships, candidates must be U.S. citizens (permanent residents are not eligible) and be applying for fall, first-year admission into a baccalaureate program at NC State University. 
  • All Park Scholarships candidates must apply for admission to NC State University by October 1st, 2015.
  • GHS can endorse 2 seniors for this scholarship competition; GHS endorsements must be completed by October 1st, 2015.  Students who are not endorsed by their school may choose to self-endorse by October 25th, 2015.
  • Students selected to be endorsed by GHS will be those that best exemplify the criteria set forth by the Park Scholarship Committee.

Pat Gainey Student Award

  • $2,000 scholarship for 2 student-athletes with a focus on need-based applicants.
  • Applicants must be either a senior, male high school athlete participating on a varsity baseball team at a NC High School Athletic Association member high school within a county of limited financial resources OR a senior female student-athlete participating on a varsity sports team at a NC High School Athletic Association member school within a county of limited financial resources.  This is a one-time, nonrenewable scholarship. 
  • Each student-athlete must have a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.2 or higher throughout the high school academic career.  More specific requirements are listed on the website below.

Ron Brown Scholar Program

  • This program awards renewable $10,000 scholarships to at least 10 academically talented, highly motivated African American students who are currently seniors in high school and plan to enroll full-time at a college or university next year.
  • Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential, and make an impact on their communities through service to others.
  • Students who submit their applications by November 1st will also have their application information forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers.  Students applying by the final deadline of January 9th will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program only.

Sallie Southall Cotton Scholarship – Goldsboro Junior Woman’s Club

  • Amount:  Local Club Scholarship amount is $500; District Scholarship: $1,000; District Runner-up: $250; State Scholarship winner receives $6,000/year for four years; State First Runner-up receives $3,000; State Second Runner-up receives $2,000; other contestants receive $500.
  • Eligibility:  Scholarship is based on the student’s character, scholastic record, evidence of intellectual promise, demonstration of ambition, leadership ability and need for financial assistance.  Applicant must be a senior (male or female) in the top 25% of the class and use the scholarship at a four-year college or university in North Carolina.
  • Deadline:  completed applications must be received by January 15th, 2016.  Applications can be mailed to Goldsboro Junior Woman’s Club, Attention: SSC Scholarship, P.O. Box 10771, Goldsboro, NC 27532. 
  • NOTE:  The club’s scholarship winner must attend the District 8 competition for interviews, held on February 6th, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Clayton, NC.  The District 8 winner will advance to State competition, held in March at a date to be determined at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC.

UNC Charlotte – Levine Scholarship Program

  • Several full scholarships are available to attend UNC Charlotte this year (which includes tuition, room, board, lap top computer, and service grant). 
  • Applicants typically score 1900-2400 on the SAT or 29-36 on the ACT Composite Score and average GPA of 3.8-4.00.
  • Students must demonstrate a commitment to community service, hold an academic record that reflects a sustained intellectual curiosity, and posses a capacity for ethical leadership that will carry students through college and beyond.

Thomas Wolfe Scholarship (UNC-Chapel Hill)

  • Provides full undergraduate support for student writers who plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill
  • Seeks to identify and reward students with exceptionally focused literary ability and promise
  • Artistic merit is the chief criterion of selection.  Students who write poetry, fiction, plays, literary non-fiction (personal narratives, memoir, travel and nature essays, literary journalism, belles-lettres) are eligible.  There is a separate application to be completed for this scholarship. 
  • Submission deadline:  Must apply for Undergraduate Admissions at UNC Chapel by October 15th, 2015.  Then, an application for the Thomas Wolfe Scholarship is due by November 15th, 2015.  You must apply to the University and the scholarship to be considered

Wayne County Livestock Development Association Scholarship

  • Amount:  1-$2,400 (4 year degree); 1 - $1,200 (2 year associate’s degree; 1 - $1,200 (college transfer student)
  • Eligibility:  Must be a high school senior or graduate AND a Wayne County resident; must enroll in an agricultural or related field degree program and/or have been active in the WCLDA Junior Livestock Show and Sale and/or the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair.

  • Deadline:  All completed applications including transcripts and letters of reference are due by January 29th, 2016 to Scholarship Chairman, Wayne County Livestock Development Association, Inc., P.O. Box 1100, Goldsboro, NC  27533-1100.

Willie Bradshaw Memorial Endowed Scholarship

  • One male and one female from each of the 8 regions will be selected to receive a $750 scholarship each.  From the pool of 16 regional recipients, one male and one female will be selected as overall state winners and receive an additional $1,000 each.  This is a one-time, nonrenewable scholarship.
  • Requirements:  This scholarship is designed to provide scholarship assistance to support an outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native and/or Asian Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American student-athlete participating on a sanctioned varsity team at a NC High School Athletic Association member school.  More specific requirements are listed on the website below.

  • Deadline:  Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on February 13th, 2016.
